As we enter the next age of the industrial revolution, there is an air of rebellion. Enterprises are under attack on many fronts. If you have data of any value you most probably have been hacked. Unicorns are disrupting traditional businesses. RABBITs (Real, Actual, Business, Building, Interesting, Technologies) are hopping all over the world. The bigger the enterprise, the bigger the threat. Look around at the enterprises struggling to transform themselves or reinvent themselves while startups do pivots. In eCommerce: Alibaba is doing to Amazon what Amazon did to Walmart. In the Auto industry: Google’s self driving car is doing to Tesla what Tesla is doing to GM with its electric car. In Transportation: Amazon’s entry into logistics and UBER’s pivot to become a logistics service pose new challenges to FedEx & UPS. In Hi-Tech: Apple’s iPhone and iPad disrupted the PC business forcing Dell to reinvent itself while IBM tries to unleash Watson. No enterprise is immune to the disruptive forces in play. The common force feeding the revolution is new technology. This technology collectively known as IOT (Internet of Things) is the next big thing. The internet changed the world. IOT has the potential to impact change by several orders of magnitude than the internet. Billions of IOT devices and sensors are expected to proliferate across the globe creating new innovative business opportunities.
The smartphone is just one of the things in IOT that has already changed the lives of many and creating new models for conducting business enabled by thousands of applications.
